Hand-Crafted Shaker Boxes
Beautiful Cherry and Birds-eye Maple Shaker boxes made by my brother-in-law Larry.
Where I live in Kentucky just about everyone knows about Shaker boxes and a bit about Shaker history because we are just minutes away from Pleasant Hill, the largest restored Shaker Village in the United States. Shakers were a very industrious and progressive religious group whose influence exists to this day. They lived and worked at Pleasant Hill from 1805-1910 and were the first to package garden seeds in packets, the first to make flat brooms, and they were the first to put herbs into capsules to make “pills” instead of just using healing herbs in teas and plasters.
They were also known for their beautiful architecture and the simplicity of their designs.
Shaker Oval Boxes have been prized for over two hundred years for their simple beauty, their functionality and the patience and skill it takes to make them. Larry handcrafts each box with the same care and attention to detail that the Shakers had when they lived at Pleasant Hill. These boxes will become family heirlooms.
